Before you know it, spring will be here and then summer! With warmer temperatures comes a hot topic: July 1st is the effective date for the eagerly awaited revamped auto insurance law that was signed by Governor Whitmer last May!
• Auto insurers are working to prepare rates and policies and purchase/renew applications.
• Health insurers and employers are determining how this affects their health plan (fully insured or self-funded) operations and costs.
• Employees and retirees enrolled in group health plans are trying to figure …out what it all means and what is best for them and their families

As of today, the primary health insurers which Michigan Planners represent on your behalf have said they do not expect to change their current coordination of benefits (COB) and subrogation provisions as a result of the new auto insurance law. This provision – to pay primary – is applicable for most fully insured group plans administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network (BCN), Health Alliance Plan (HAP), McLaren Health Plan, and Priority Health.
Self-funded group health plans, however, will continue to determine how their plans will coordinate with auto/motorcycle insurance. Please note that health insurance companies are continuing to assess the situation based on state and federal guidance. Michigan Planners remains vigilant in our contact with them and will notify you as more information becomes available.
Please feel free to contact your Michigan Planners client service staff if you have questions or if we can be of further service to you.
