‘Tis the Season for Open Enrollment

This week we pay tribute to the upcoming national holiday, Labor Day. As we enjoy our time off next Monday, I wanted to share a few facts as to why we get to enjoy a day of rest and recognition.
As we all know, Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September and was created as a dedication to the American workers and their contributions to the strength and prosperity of our country. Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894, but municipal ordinances were passed as early as 1885 recognizing the day. So how did the day come about?
Well, during this time, the labor movement in the United States was growing, and several unions proposed a get-together for a large labor festival. At the time, those organizing the event were unsure as to how many people would attend because workers were foregoing a day’s pay to attend the event. The event was held at a park in New York City and little did the organizers know it would be so well received.
With over 20,000 attendees, the event was a huge success so much that the Central Labor Union passed a resolution “that the 5th of September be proclaimed a general holiday for the working men in this city.” Once the day became a national holiday, it was changed to the first Monday of September.
The newspapers of the day declared the event “a day of the people.”
Enjoy your time off next Monday, and do something nice for yourself. Lower the stress level, schedule that overdue preventive visit, and get out and enjoy the weather before the fall colors change and cooler weather enter our lives…….. and don’t forget to take your kids to school on Tuesday. Summer is nearing its end.
